Chapter Fourteen

Kora

“What would you like to do now?” Callum asks me as he heads north out of Hastings. “It’s a cold day to be traipsing around historical sites. Would you rather go back to London?”

“No. This will probably be my only chance to be able to see it. I’m okay. If you’re sure you have time.”

“Of course,” he says. “All right. I haven’t been there for a long time.”

I’m surprised that he doesn’t want to head straight back to work, but I don’t say anything, and look out of the window at the snow-covered walls and gardens of the houses. The roads have all been gritted so they’re clear, and the pavements are turning to slush. It’s like all the magic that was in the world yesterday has rotted away. I don’t realize I’ve said the words aloud until Callum sighs.

“I’m sorry you feel as if your trip has been spoiled,” he says. “I know it must have come as an awful shock. But still, maybe try and take from it the positive things, too. Perhaps when you think about it a bit more, it’ll help you understand your mum, like for example how she was a twin, and that’s probably why she also had twins. I guess it means you’re more likely to have twins?”

“I suppose. It’s really shocked me that she was a twin. Theo and I do have a different relationship than the one we have with our brothers. Of course I’d be devastated to lose any of them, but it would be different if something happened to Theo—that’s why it was so hard when he went missing. No wonder she tried to take her own life. And she had to spend all that time without Maggie. Now I understand why she used to have those quiet times, and why she took those long walks. She must have felt as if half of her was missing.”

“I wonder if it made it worse, being adopted,” Callum asks. “If she felt Maggie was her last connection to her birth parents.”

I swallow hard as tears prick my eyes. “I don’t know why I feel so upset. It doesn’t really make any difference to me, does it? What does it matter who her birth parents were? Gran and Grandpa loved her, so that should be all that matters.”

Callum curls his fingers around mine. “Honestly, I think you’re still grieving for your mum. Hot on the heels of her passing came your breakup with Julian, and then Theo’s disappearance.”

“My grandfather died, too, in December.”

“Jesus, Kora, really?”

I nod. “And there was Rebecca’s death.”

“Rebecca?”

I tell him about Ben’s first wife, about their poisonous relationship, and what a shock it was when we found out she’d been killed in a car crash. “Of course it was horrible, and I felt sorry for little Estella, who lost her mum. But it was a very confusing time. Ben was so unhappy with her, and I think it was such a relief that she’d gone from his life, and then he had terrible guilt for feeling that.
